Cranial Asymmetry and Cranial Helmets
Our team of cranial specialists can build a custom cranial helmet for your child to help reshape flat spots and give their head a more rounded and symmetrical appearance. Many common factors can lead to cranial asymmetries and deformities. Some of these factors occur before birth due to limited space in the uterus, multiple births or breech births. Some of these deformities can also occur after birth due to poor muscle tone, spinal abnormalities, neck muscle tightness and spending long periods of time in one position. All of this sounds scary, but rest assured, our highly skilled team of cranial remolding specialists are here to help you understand and be comfortable with it all. Our team is here to provide the highest level of care and attention to detail in order to take care of the littlest members of your team.
What should parents expect when they are referred for a helmet?
- Our cranial helmet program requires only one helmet. Other providers may require many of their patients to use two helmets.
- We have visit times for evaluations available within two weeks of referral.
- Mobile scanning units allow scanning to be performed near you at our Fort Worth and Dallas offices, as well as in hospital calls, if necessary.
- Parents should plan on an hour for their first appointment. During this appointment, the orthotist will give the parent information about repositioning techniques and plagiocephaly. A general history will be taken, as well as detailed measurements and a 3-D scan.
